Bio: Brentwood, TN
In a Nashville where status quo is the status quo and finding unique talent is like finding a diamond on a rhinestone dress, there are few opportunities to become acquainted with someone like Charla Beth Corn. The road from a tiny farming town on the plains of west Texas to her home in MusicCity is much more winding and bumpy than the Interstate 40 that brought her nearly five years ago.
A little over two decades ago, Farwell, Texas, population 1252 became population 1253 with the arrival a character who would grow up to become one of the regions most notorious young troubadours. While some artists draw on their troubled childhoods and family dysfunctions, Charla finds her inspiration in her very strong bonds with an extraordinarily close-knit family. It was through that fabric that Charla found her voice, or her voice found her. On a Sunday morning sitting in the fourth pew of an eight-pew Methodist church, her Grandfather, or “Gramps”, first heard what would later be described as “jaw-dropping pipes” and began encouraging her to sing, first for him, then for the family. With growing frequency, both in her voice and in her performances, she began belting out the gospel in song for churches all over the windy Texas plains.
Charla's personality lends itself to overachievement. She simply stands out in a crowd. Throughout her high school years Charla sang. Like everyone else she participated in all of the available sports, became an All-American cheerleader, but most of all she sang. She was even homecoming queen, and she sang. She became Miss Border-Town Days, and she sang. She even got runner-up in the Miss Amarillo pageant and I’ll give you three guesses as to what her talent was… nope, interpretive ribbon dancing… (she sang.)
Farewell to Farwell and mom and dad and howdy to SouthPlainsCollege where one of the greatest experiences of her life awaited her in the Creative Arts department. The ubiquitous country music school of Texas has spawned many stars of note through the years, most notably Natalie Maines and Lee Ann Womack among a host of others. Her education there was much more than major scales and Lydian modes and algebra and history, here she learned how to function in a real, working, competitive music marketplace. She also got her first taste of the studio, a setting where she’s as natural as a thoroughbred on a race track.
After college she sank her teeth firmly into performing full-time, and an answered audition call introduced her to what would become her second passion: acting. Her talents as both singer and actor have landed her parts in musicals and plays throughout Texas and Tennessee. She first took the stage as the unstoppable Sadie in the world-famous musical production “Texas”, and has performed in numerous other productions through the southwest. Lately she has been actively involved in the Tennessee theater with leading roles in Tennessee Performing Arts Center Circle Player’s productions of “Grease” and “Rocky Horror Show”.
As both a singer and actor Charla’s on-stage performance style can best be described as electric. Her in-your-face, no-holds-barred personality comes through in spades when she’s under the lights. She can be found on the Nashville scene both in the studio and on stage with her new project “Texas Uprising and The King Ranch Band”.
“It’s all about delivering to your audience something they can’t get anywhere else,” she says about her on-stage persona, and in this world of cliché she couldn’t be more right. “I try to give them a little bit of who I am to take with them, not just ‘Hey, look at me, I can sing!’”.
From west Texas to middle Tennessee Charla has left a wake of fans and admirers, not the least of which are fantastic performers in their own right. Her personality leaves you speechless, her beauty leaves you breathless and her talent leaves you wondering where you lost yours. If you haven’t met Charla Beth Corn, you soon will, whether it’s on stage, on tape or in the flesh, you’ll leave the experience a better person for having it. Give her a chance to spread her wish and this chick will rule the roost.
