Canadian Country Artists are making a big impression on the "world" of Country Music! There have been some great new artists emerging recently and one of those artists is Cathy Korpi.
Cathy is no stranger to performing, having spent most of her life on stage. Her love of singing started early, singing in school and church choirs. In grade school Cathy was singing Soprano in the choir and Tenor in a triple trio group. She was very petite, so everyone was always shocked to hear such a big voice come out of such a little person. In her late teens Cathy’s big brother, who was a drummer, got her singing with his band and from then on she was hooked!
Cathy won several significant country singing contests when she first started out including the Canadian Country Singing Championships, the Ontario Open Country Singing Contest, the Northern Ontario Country Singing Contest, the Canadian Duet Championships (with a longtime friend) and the Canadian National Exhibition Country Singing Contest. Cathy used these wins as stepping-stones and put her prizes towards recording.
Singing in clubs and at fairs for several years she continued to hone her live performance skills singing at private corporate events across Canada and the United States. Audience size doesn’t rattle Cathy. She has sung for crowds of every size, from 200 to a staggering 80,000 in the Atlanta Dome. Performing live has always been Cathy’s favorite part of the music business. She feels that the people in the audience give so much back and she thrives on that. "It is amazing how music can transcend everything else and how you can be singing to people and feel like you are communicating with each one individually," she says. You may have heard some of Cathy’s songs on your local country radio station recently but 2006 marks the return of Cathy to the Canadian Country Music "live performance" scene.
Cathy is a regular National Anthem singer (or at as many games as her busy schedule allows), at Barrie Colts home games in Barrie Ontario (OHL), as well as occasionally for the Toronto Blue Jays Baseball Club and the Barrie Baycats Baseball Club. She is very proud of being Canadian and as a result of the number of private corporate events she has sung both the Canadian and the American anthems at as well as the number of sporting events, she recorded a special version of each anthem, with the arrangements custom made for her by a respected composer. They will make the hair on the back of your neck stand up!
Her CD, "Between Now & Forever" has had several great releases to Canadian radio, including, "Between Now & Forever", "Long Way To Fall", "Find Me" and "Love Me". There are 6 other great songs on that CD that make it worthy of holding a place in your CD player at home or in the car.
Excitement is in the air with a new CD, "Ferris Wheel"! Cathy recorded a song with Martina McBride that was written by Joel Feeney and Trey Bruce. Martina produced it and sang BGV’s. It was done in the studio that she and her husband John McBride own in Nashville. This song will be featured on the new CD which just released. Cathy believes that in order to be successful you have to create an environment where success can thrive and you have to associate with like-minded people. "Decide what you want, decide what you are willing to do to get it and then go get it," she says. The opportunity to spend that kind of one on one time with Martina McBride was an opportunity any singer would jump at, but for a currently independent Canadian artist, it was a chance of a lifetime to "learn from a master". Before she went into the studio Cathy had to keep reminding herself that despite all of Martina’s success, Martina was just a normal person like herself. This helped cool Cathy’s nerves just a little so that she could make the most of the time. Martina has been one of Cathy’s all time favorite singers in any genre of music since Martina started out. To be in the position of singing and having Martina produce and give her advice was an enormous honor for Cathy.
In November of 2005, Cathy started the production on a new CD, in Vancouver British Columbia. After talking with several very talented Canadian producers, Cathy made the decision to work with Tony Rudner who is well known in the industry for his work with Farmers Daughter and Rachel Matkin. The song selection for this CD was a labour of love for Cathy and has yielded 10 incredible songs. "I am very happy with the groove of this CD", Cathy says. There are a few more mainstream country songs, and some that are a little more traditionally flavored songs. She tackled "issues" in the songs as well as including some that are guaranteed to just make you feel good. This CD reflects where Cathy has come from in the last few years of her life and where she is at now. "I’ve never recorded anything that I am embarrassed or ashamed about" Cathy says, but this CD, "I am more excited and proud of than I have ever been".
Everyone always asks Cathy if she writes her own songs. She has written some but never recorded any of them, feeling that they were not up to the standard of the songs that she could get from other talented writers. "One of my goals is to be able to spend some of the time I am traveling on the road doing more writing and honing that skill," Cathy says. When she was in the studio with Martina McBride, Martina offered her many tidbits of very wise advice. One of the things that Martina told Cathy was that she did not feel that she was very good at writing and so she left the writing to those who were, and she focused on singing. Martina told Cathy to be true to who she was musically, to not be afraid to say "I am not a writer" if that’s how she felt, and to speak up for what she wanted when she was recording and performing. So for now she is thrilled that she has been able to record songs written by some incredibly talented writers. Gretchen Peters penned one of the new songs and others came from the likes of Tanya Hancheroff, Joel Feeney, Trey Bruce and Tony Rudner, to name a few.
There is no doubt Cathy was born for to sing and perform. Her powerful vocals and presence on stage will keep fans entertained and coming back for more! Performing live is Cathy’s favorite part of the music business. Some people love the studio, the feeling, the isolation etc. Cathy loves the people and would be thrilled if all she ever had to do was perform.
