Born and raised in Moundsville, West Virginia, country music played a major role in Dawn's childhood. Her grandmother, Gladys Truex always played in a band. They played local square dances and benefits, with her Grandmother on guitar, her Uncle Larry Truex on fiddle, and her mother Nila on vocals. At the age of five or six, she remembers singing into her hair brush and dreaming of life as a country music star. WWVA broadcasts from the CapitalMusic Hall in Wheeling, W.Va. brought home the music of George Jones, Tom T. Hall, Charley Pride, Loretta Lynn and many others. Some of Dawn's favorites were Dolly Parton, Tammy Wynette, and the great Patsy Cline. Despite encouragement and cajoling from Dawn's Grandmother Gladys, her shyness kept her from singing publicly except on rare occasions. Through the years the dream was put on the back burner. A career singing seemed completely out of reach. The turning point came in 2004 when Dawn's brother Monty overheard Dawn singing along with Brad Paisley's "Old Rugged Cross." He acted amazed at her voice and told Dawn that she made the hairs on the back of his neck stand up. He had never heard his sister sing before. He challenged Dawn to pursue and go after her dream of being a singer. Soon afterwards, she realized that she didn't want to grow old regretting that she hadn't ever pursued her dream. Dawn's finally put herself in motion and has come in contact with professional people who have helped to guide her in the right direction. Dawn's taking every opportunity that comes her way to sing and perform in front of an audience. She has performed with her Uncle's band in Ohio on a few occasions and was also invited to perform at a Christmas Benefit in Mesa, Arizona benefiting the Phoenix Child's Crisis Center. Dawn is more dedicated than ever to turning her childhood dream into reality.
