Bio:
When born-and-raised Vancouver singer/songwriter Kelly Brock first tossed her calico garter into the roots-rock arena a decade or so ago, the term “independent” was interpreted as either unerringly hip or hopelessly unmarketable, depending which side of the major-label fence you happened to be grazing. These days, it’s the majors wondering where their next corporate meal ticket is coming from, while do-it-yourselfers working genres from folk and country to metal and rap are reaping the rewards of tenacity, integrity and faith in their own convictions. It was therefore less ironic than practical when Brock formed her own label christened, logically enough, Do It Yourself Records – or DitY, for short. She is, after all, a get-up-and-go kinda gal with an upbeat, positive outlook on life, an attitude righteously reflected in the music she makes. Polishing her teenage spurs with the Lost Durangos, an “alt.country” outfit, years before the term was coined, she topped college charts across Canada with the band’s EP, EvilTown. It was in the mid ’90s, however, that she began working under her own name and honing her individual sound. A well-received demo laid the foundation for her 1997 self-titled debut CD. A single/video from the CD, “Sacred,” put her on the musical map and wound up on the popular television drama, Dawson’s Creek along with receiving medium-rotation airplay at CMT Canada. Yet another tune, “Long Gone,” was featured in director Anne Wheeler’s film Better Than Chocolate. Two more successful independent CD recordings followed- So Close and Dirty Dishes. Her most recent CD release consists of some notable song-writers and co-writers including Mike Daly (Whiskeytown/Ryan Adams), Tom Taylor (She Stole My Beer) and Greg Potter (Lost Durangos). “Dirty Dishes is my third CD and most personal record to date,” says Brock. “All of the songs are very close to my heart. Some are new compositions, some have been written by friends and others have been kicking around for a long time”. It is a culmination of her many years in the business, containing hints of early influences, such as Bonnie Raitt, Maria McKee and Dolly Parton. The genres include pop, roots, rock and country. “It has always been important for me to not be pigeonholed or confined to a particular style,” maintains the singer-songwriter. “If I record a collection of pop tunes and throw on a traditional country song, I want the freedom to do that.” Brock’s music has been featured on many popular TV dramas including Dawson’s Creek, Smallville, Joan Of Arcadia, Beautiful People and the Chris Issak Show. The title track from her latest CD, "Dirty Dishes" and "Drive Away" were also featured on the Food Network's, The Surreal Gourmet and in December 2005, Warner Music Canada released a CD compilation of songs from the show that includes Brock's self-penned tune, Drive Away along with songs by kd lang, Aretha Franklin, Chaka Khan, Moby and Tom Waits. Along with writing and recording her own material, Brock has been singing and performing live for many years with the fun-loving house-band, Dr. Strangelove and the very entertaining female vocal pop/jazz-trio, The Sirens. Brock also sings back-ups with the popular 80’s rock band, Loverboy and will be featured in their up and coming live concert DVD release, scheduled for 2006.
